Okuma was around seven-years-old and playing outside her home in Pauma Valley, California, when she made an unexpected friend, a California scrub jay. Compared with, say, parrots or budgerigars, scrub jays—which are known for their long tail and beautiful blue coloring—are rarely domesticated, and don’t often interact with humans. She and her cousins were playing with an old stove that was in Okuma’s yard when the bird landed on it, as though to join in on their fun. Okuma then noticed that the bird seemed sick, and proceeded to nurse it back to health. “When he was healthy again, he just sat there, and wouldn’t take off,” says Okuma. Okuma named the bird Peep, and Peep lived with the Okumas for the next 26 years, eventually passing away in 2010. She has only fond memories of Peep and his big personality. “He had free rein of the house,” Okuma says. “If you left your wallet open, he would pull out all of the money and bring it back to his cage. Once, I went into my grandma’s room, and all of her money and her cigarettes were gone.
