They will be equipped with a device that kills them if they try to escape or tamper with it. They’ll obey and as reward will get to have fun before they inevitably die. If they actually survive the suicide mission, they’ll have the bonus of a day of freedom before they’re sent another mission. The money given to the person of their choosing will be a healthy tax free lump sum that will be about 25% of their projected cost of imprisonment had they not got in the program. Let’s say Matt is 27 years old and is serving life. Matt could live 50 years at 90,000 a year to maintain, that’s over 4 million he’ll cost the taxpayers. Let’s say Matt has 2 children that he’ll never be able to do anything for, but gets offered the chance to provide his kids and parents and whoever else he wants a portion of the 1 million for his successful mission. Between oil and sharp edges, a plainclothes police officer’s shirts and jackets suffered mightily. The less the rig was worn, the longer one’s clothing lasted! Police work takes its toll on the human body, and after fifteen or twenty years, most officers will have back problems associated with wearing their duty belt so much. Being able to not wear a weapon while sitting at your desk is a blessing when your back hurts. Modern ‘hardware’ has largely solved most of these problems. Today’s pistols are light and without sharp edges, and holsters are vastly improved over those available to those in previous generations who carried a concealed handgun. Now there’s all sorts of high risk unethical missions that are out there. Maybe instead of risking soldiers or police, you send in a suicide soldier. Now they don’t have the option of freedom, but their family and loved ones could receive a reward for their successful completion of a mission. They will be equipped with a device that kills them if they try to escape or tamper with it. They’ll obey and as reward will get to have fun before they inevitably die. If they actually survive the suicide mission, they’ll have the bonus of a day of freedom before they’re sent another mission. The money given to the person of their choosing will be a healthy tax free lump sum that will be about 25% of their projected cost of imprisonment had they not got in the program. Let’s say Matt is 27 years old and is serving life. Matt could live 50 years at 90,000 a year to maintain, that’s over 4 million he’ll cost the taxpayers. Let’s say Matt has 2 children that he’ll never be able to do anything for, but gets offered the chance to provide his kids and parents and whoever else he wants a portion of the 1 million for his successful mission. That’s a lot of money. Enough to agree to some crazy stuff. They provide all the training for mission so he is as prepared as possible. If he fails, there’s no payday. Maybe just the max social security payment from having a dead parent. Now that in itself isn’t too bad because let’s say Matt never paid into Social Security in his life of crime, so getting any type of benefit would also be a plus. perfectly steady. Crouching, or better yet going prone mitigates this, allowing the player to control their aim better and minimising the effect of recoil. It also allows you to deploy bipods or rest your weapon on cover. This is especially important when fighting at longer distances and in ARMA it isn’t uncommon to be shooting at enemies several hundred meters away. At those distances you basically need to stay still and stable to hit anything. Especially if you’re using slower firing or heavier weapons. Outside of aiming, it of course makes you a smaller target for return fire. Generally it’s considered better to reach cover before worrying about your stance, but many players make the mistake of simply dropping to the ground as soon as shots land near them, even if they’re in the open. This is usually a bad idea, since anyone shooting at you will probably still hit you long before you drop, find them, steady your aim and return fire. It’s easier to hit a prone man than a running one, and you can worry about returning fire once you aren’t in the open. An exception is if you know where the enemy is and have managed to put low cover or a ridge between you and them. In this case going prone is usually the right call, since standing would expose you. Finally the low profile is obviously good for stealth. If the enemy doesn’t know where you are they’ll have a harder time spotting a slow moving guy on his stomach vs someone running around in the open. It could, but it commonly doesn’t happen. Switching out your gun, your ammunition load, etc isn’t as convenient in real life as it is in games. So, usually a soldier is equipped with a particular weapon, trains on that weapon, becomes a specialist with that weapon, and that’s what they carry. When a squad goes on a patrol or some other mission, they have no idea what they are going to encounter, and at what ranges they may have to engage the enemy. A squad full of shotguns would be great if you’re fighting close quarters in buildings, but what if that squad is ambushed from troops 200m away while they are marching to the cluster of buildings? Answer: they’re screwed. They’re dead, because the enemy is beyond the effective range of the shotguns, and they can’t fire back at the deadly AK-47 and RPK fire. Most military units have a finely tuned assortment of weapons oriented around common missions and worst case scenarios. An M4 may not be the best close-quarters weapon, but it will still kill the enemy, and is a good thing to have when engaged at longer range distances, compared to a SMG or shotgun. A unit may have a sniper team to provide overwatch, in the event they are attacked from very long ranges, but you’d never see a team of nothing but snipers deployed, because they’d be sitting ducks for a force that might flank them or approach their position from directions they can’t cover. We passed the first house which was some kind of mill (there was a small river nearby) and soon, we were near the center of the village. We were extremely careful; even when there were no enemy troops, they might have been some civilians left and we knew that they were all armed to the teeth. I stopped at the wall of a house and looked around the corner. Five meters away from me there was a guy sitting on a stone wall! Fortunately, he had his back towards me and couldn’t see me. I pointed my AK-47 at him but didn’t shoot. I wasn’t sure whether he was a civilian (most probably not, there weren’t that many around anymore), a paramilitary, or a soldier. His clothes were green and grey but that didn’t mean much. Many farmers wore military clothing when they were working on their fields. He also looked too old to be a regular army soldier and therefore, I concluded that he was probably a paramilitary. The Serb paramilitaries were lightly armed civilians (automatic weapons and some mortars) that were responsible for a lot of atrocities and crimes against the Albanian population. It would have been easy to kill him, but before I pulled the trigger I thought again: I couldn’t see a weapon. That didn’t mean that he didn’t have one, maybe it was next to his feet behind the wall or maybe he felt completely safe in his village and didn’t bother to carry his rifle along with him all the time.
